Paul Auster

(1947)

American writer. He lives in Brooklyn, New York. Born into a Jewish family in New Jersey. He is the author of numerous novels, scripts and also writes non-fiction. He is also a poet, translator and a film director. He uses a form of criminal and detective genre to reveal the existential nature of life of the characters. He created his unique, compelling, postmodern style.

His best known works include the novels The New York Trilogy, Leviathan, Mr.. Vertigo or prose memoir Invention of Solitude. He has directed several films (such as Smoke, Inner Life of Martin Frost).

In a small room with a bed, desk and chair (and where maybe is, but maybe not a wardrobe) sits the old man. He wakes up every morning without a single memory in his head, but with a vague sense of guilt. He has no idea, whether the door which separates him from the outside world is locked. A woman named Anna comes to him, tells him about pills and therapy, but also about love and promises. He also has other visitors, but is not sure of their intentions.

Who is this old man? Is his name really Mr. Blank? What is he treated for? Is he a prisoner, or did he come to this strange asylum voluntarily? Will he have enough time to solve the mystery, which surrounds him?
