Nicole Krauss

(1974)

Born in New York to an English mother and an American father with roots in Germany, Ukraine, Hungary and Belarus, Nicole Krauss is one of the three most important young American writers today (next to her husband, Jonathan Safran Foer and Dave Eggers).

She has been writing since she was fourteen. She studied English at Stanford University and has gained various awards for poetry while studying. There she also met with Joseph Brodsky, Russian poet, who helped her a lot and introduced her to other poets. She also studied at Oxford University and the Courtauld Institute in London. In 2002 Nicole released her first novel, Man Walks Into a Room. She is married and has two children. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.
American novelist Nicole Krauss in her new book moved a bit further once again since her last novel The History of Love. While till now she was "only" writing - imagining, playing and having fun, now as though a darker side of the writing would push on her and in her latest novel, Great House, she undergoes a thorough examination. She describes the different houses, their various owners and their various furniture - particularly a gigantic desk - but we slowly begin to suspect that the great house, which sometimes recalls the maze, that temple that is still collapsing and building anew, is our world , our own thinking.
"Krauss has taken great risks in dispensing with the whimsy and humor that she summoned for her tragic vision in “The History of Love.” Here she gives us her tragic vision pure. It is a high-wire performance, only the wire has been replaced by an exposed nerve, and you hold your breath, and she does not fall."
