Old Men at Midnight (Chaim Potok)
Last novel of Jewish American writer Chaim Potok is in fact a trilogy of novellas. The lives of three Jewish men in it are connected by a brief meeting with the same woman: Ilana Davita Dinn. Noah Stremin, guy who survived Auschwitz thanks to his talent, meets her as a young high school student; a former colonel of the Russian secret service Leonid Sertov meets her as a professional assistant of the Department of Russian; and Benjamin Walter, a professor of sociology and military meets her as an aging writer. It's always Davita, who helps them unravel the skein of memories for world and personal wars and injuries from them, so that they can tell their own stories on the background of the great story of 20th century.
"The book is about remembrance and the importance of telling one’s stories. All three stories are about war, and so are not pleasant, but the author has an amazing ability to pull you in. An excellent and thought-provoking book."
