Jean Giono

(1895-1970)

Born in a poor family in the Provencal village of Manosque, which he rarely left and mentioned in several of his works. When he was sixteen, he left left school, worked as a clerk in a bank and later was drafted into the First World War. In the twenties he was writing tirelessly, until his first novel Colline (Hill) was published in 1929. The book, as well as the following ones, was a great success, so he Giono is then only writing. His work is full of French rural life in Provence. He was a pacifist pursuing life in a strong connection with nature. He died in 1970 of heart failure.
The story of a simple Provençal shepherd Elzéard Bouffier, who, by ordinary work, changed the whole landscape. We find him in the middle of a barren wasteland, arid without any vegetation, with strong winds and misery. Elzéard plants trees every day across the country. He does it so tirelessly, for years, and believes that "one can express as creative as God, and even in other areas, not only in destruction." Through his tireless work over the years the trees grow into a forest, and a desert slowly becomes a Promised Land: hostile and hardworking people are gradually changing. The story is so touching and inspiring in its simplicity that many people believe that the shepherd Bouffier is a real historical figure. The famous Canadian filmmaker Frédéric Back made the 1987 half-hour animated film awarded with an Oscar.
A beautiful book about hope and the meaning of life with great illustrations of Ľuboslav Paľo.
